STEP FOUR: DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A SCOREKEEPING SYSTEM

Once you have specific and measurable goals, the next step in creating a winning team is to develop and implement a system for keeping score. You need a "scoreboard"— a highly visible, easily understood way of conveying how well your team is performing versus how well it should be performing.

Find a location your employees visit frequently—such us a lunchroom or locker room—and devote part of the wall space to a large, colorful scoreboard. Post graphs like the one shown detailing each of the five or ten critical areas of performance you are tracking.  Once you have the graphs posted, hold a meeting with your employees to go over the graphs. Explain each measure being graphed and why it is important. Show the ultimate goal and discuss how you arrived at the goal. Finally—and most important, discuss with your employees how their behavior can affect performance.
