How to Monetize a Website

The basic idea is to set up a website that attracts traffic (visitors) from search engines and from links from other sites. Traffic can also be generated by a wide variety of methods, including email advertising, pay-per-click advertising, traffic-exchange programs, banner-exchange programs, banners and classified ads on other websites, articles on other sites, ezine ads, etc.

"Monetizing" a website refers to "converting" its traffic into money earnings. One way to do this is to have a company like CBproAds place ads on the website. The ad to the right can earn me money if it generates sales for the advertisers.

The first reason why I chose CBproAds is because their Alexa chart from March to May 08 indicates spectacular business growth. This means they've been doing lots of things right and have been "grabbing an increasing share of the online advertising market." This suggests a high level of company competence. (The Alexa chart indicates that the CBproAds company experienced "growing pains" from its launch until mid-March 08. Then they "got their act together" and quickly rose from barely in the top 100,000 websites to being in the top 40,000. This can be seen as a company rising above its success threshold!

The second reason is that they place ClickBank ads. With Google Adsense and similar services you get ads for which you get paid based on clicks ("PPC"); whereas, with CBproAds you get paid based on sales ("PPS"). A typical commission on a ClickBank sale is $40. I expect this to be more profitable than a "few pennies per click." (CBproAds also displays "improved versions" of the ClickBank ads, called "redefined" ads. In general, I'm impressed by the ads they display.)

The third reason why I chose CBproAds is because they don't disapprove or ban you because they "dislike" the looks of your page, "dislike" other ads on your page, "dislike" the contents of your page, or "dislike" the programs you promote. In short, they don't "play policeman!" (Nevertheless, their Terms of Service do reasonably disallow certain websites and practices.)

A fourth reason is that they have a referral program for PRO members, enabling me to earn from both CBproAds itself, as well as from ClickBank sales. If you sign up from here, and you upgrade, then I earn commissions. (I can also earn extra, even if I don't upgrade.)

You can make money with a FREE CBproAds account. You can also make money with CBproAds, even if you don't have your own website. They provide you with a "customized StoreFront site" for free!

You can of course use CBproAds to monetize your own website and earn money the same way I do. You can display ads from CBproAds on as many webpages as you like. You can choose between several display formats, including "Slide Show Ads" and "Scroll Ads." They also provide tracking statistics, so you can tell how each ad display is performing.

By the way, if you experience difficulties implementing any "how-to," "self-improvement," or "success" information -- bought through ClickBank or elsewhere -- then you may suspect that there might be one or more Make-or-Break Issues (MBIs) you need to handle first.

A Virtuous Traffic-Money Circle

The Alexa chart below shows the traffic to Bigbooster.com. A rising trend indicates faster growth than other leading websites. "Above 60,000" indicates that Bigbooster.com is among the top 60,000 most popular of all websites in the world.

Suppose I spend "X" to generate traffic to various Bigbooster.com pages. Now suppose that this traffic can be "converted" into money to the tune of "1.5X." Suppose I can do this so the ratio can be more or less maintained as "X" is increased. If I spend $100 to drive traffic to Bigbooster.com, I earn $150 from the various ways Bigbooster.com is monetized. This would make it a great business!

If the "1.5X ratio" can be maintained at higher levels, I could spend $10,000 to drive traffic to Bigbooster.com and earn back $15,000. Then I could spend $15,000 to earn $22,500. Etc., etc., etc. Can you see the "virtuous circle?" Can you see that if you can set in motion such a virtuous circle for yourself, you've created an "automatic expanding money machine" that can bring you an ever-growing income? And it could grow to a level of earning millions! Is this kind of "leverage mechanism" related to how the "Googles" and "Yahoos" have attained such heights of wealth creation?

Leveraging A Virtuous Traffic-Money Circle

A website can also be used to generate affiliate sales. Mark Joyner is one of the most competent online marketers. Not only does he provide great marketing expertise, but you can also learn a great deal just by studying how he markets. Be sure to check out how the items under "Other Simpleology Products & Courses" are being marketed.

Before Simpleology, Joyner started a program called Free Agent Path. Part of the program provided members with training to enable them to become financially independent. The program didn't work and was eventually abandoned. As a result, Joyner researched teaching and learning methods extensively. To succeed with the kind of strategy I outline on this page (or to succeed in general), you may need to acquire knowledge and skills that enable you to "rise above your success threshold." You may be able to apply Simpleology 101 to do that.

However, it's possible that certain "Make-or-Break Issues" (MBIs) are keeping you stuck below your success threshold. An example could be depression/helplessness. There may be something you need to handle first in order to maximize your progress. See also "One Factor."

In a sense, you may have to do some work to "monetize yourself!" Make yourself more competent to generate money!

The Science of Getting Lucky!

Another wat to "monetize yourself" is to get lucky!

Note what Warren Buffett says about luck.

I (Frederick Mann) used to reject the idea of "luck" out of hand. That started changing when I read the book Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. (He's also the author of The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable.)

Then I "dug out" a book on luck by Richard Wiseman, which I'd bought a few years ago, but hadn't read. To my surprise I found that Wiseman had studied luck scientifically.

I now suspect that luck may be one of the most important success factors for many people. Just learn to get lucky!

Actually, it's more involved than that. You may need to prepare and set things up so you can "take advantage of luck" when opportunities -- like this website! -- become available to you. In Change Your Luck: The Scientific Way To Improve Your Life!, Dr. Richard Wiseman provides four Principles and 12 Subprinciples:

  • Principle One: Maximize your chance opportunities.

However... because of one or more "Make-or-Break Issues" (MBIs), it may be difficult for you to take advantage of opportunities when they become available to you. You may need to handle your MBIs first!

PREFACE: One Small Step

Kaizen = small steps for continuous improvement. Author has explored Kaizen applied to personal success for decades. Small changes are least threatening. Effective method to build new neural connections. (Contrasts kaizen with innovation = major, radical changes.)

CHAPTER ONE: Why Kaizen Works

Brain's physiology makes change frightening. Amygdalae control fight, flight, or freeze reaction. To the amygdalae, change = danger.

"Large goal --> fear --> access to cortex restricted --> failure.

Small goal --> fear bypassed --> cortex engaged --> success."

Small steps --> cortex works --> new brain software, new nerve pathways, new habits. Change = joy.

CHAPTER TWO: Ask Small Questions

Think of very small question to improve something. Small questions better at engaging brain. Too big questions trigger fear.

Function of hippocampus: what information to store and what to retrieve. Repetion important.

Avoid negative questions: "Why am I such a jerk?," etc.

CHAPTER THREE: Think Small Thoughts

"Mind Sculpture How-To" (10 steps) -- first two steps:

  1. "Isolate a task either that you are afraid to do or that makes you uncomfortable. Try to give yourself at least a month before you actually have to perform this activity.

  2. Decide how many seconds you're willing to devote to mind sculpture for this task each day, Make sure you allot seconds, not minutes or hours; the time commitment should be so low that you can easily fulfill its requirements every single day. Repetition is important."

"Practice" task mentally before performing it physically. "Within minutes of "practicing" a task mentally, using all your senses, your brain's chemistry begins to change."

CHAPTER FOUR: Take Small Actions

"Small actions are at the heart of kaizen. By taking steps so tiny that they seem trivial or even laughable, you'll sail calmly past obstacles that have defeated you before. Slowly -- but painlessly! -- you'll cultivate an appetite for continued success and lay down a permanent new route to change."

Effectiveness of small steps in persuasion techniques.

One of the most solid predictors of success: Turn to another human for support when in trouble or fear.

CHAPTER FIVE: Solve Small Problems

Learn to spot small mistakes and small problems... before they become big mistakes and big problems.

If you react with anger to life's challenges, you're seven times more likely to die prematurely from heart disease! Treatments: Constantly look for small favors to do for others; play soft music. [See also #TL12: How to Achieve Emotional Control.]

Blind spot #1: When starting a relationship, look out for "small" defects that could be tips of icebergs.

Blind spot #2: When interviewing people to hire, observe carefully toward end. Questions they ask; curiousity; willingness to listen

Blind spot #3: Overwhelming crisis -- example diarrhea in third world -- can be reduced 40% by using soap to wash hands. Author doesn't mention "democide = murder by government!" Does mention New York City's crime -- in the 80s, small steps reduced crime dramatically, though some drastic measures also used.

Small kaizen steps + giant leaps of innovation = formidable weapon to solve major problems!

In time of major crisis, it may be possible to locate smaller problems within the larger disaster, and use kaizen techniques to move toward an overall solution. Small positive steps may prevent dispair.

CHAPTER SIX: Bestow Small Rewards

Importance of intrinsic motivation. Large external rewards tend to inhibit or stunt intrinsic motivation. Large cash awards may steer people away from small improvements.

CHAPTER SEVEN: Identify Small Moments

Plagues and how Edward Jenner discovered vaccination cure for smallpox. Creative possibilities in small things. Example: Asked police officer dissatisfied with job to find one moment each day he enjoyed. Enabled officer to discover what he really liked, so he changed his career.

By observing "natural" interactions of couples, Dr. John Gottman could predict -- with 93% accuracy -- whether a couple would be happily married, miserable, divorced within four years. In the successful relationships, positive attention -- in the form of small gestures -- outweighed negative by five to one.

To train your brain to live in the moment, focus your thoughts on an object or person that gives you the strongest sense of pleasure.

CHAPTER EIGHT: Kaizen for Life

The essence of kaizen: an optimistic belief about your potential for continuous improvement. Kaizen is a process that's never complete.

The Small-Step-Progression Principle (SSPP) is powerful -- particularly for emotionally sensitive people. Attempting steps that are "too big" for emotionally sensitive people may result in their amygdalae triggering a fear-based reaction ("fight, flight, or freeze"). The amydalae are part of the limbic system. Triggering them typically involves a degree of shut-down of your neocortex or thinking brain.

Generally, when you try to do something that makes you uncomfortable -- stepping outside your comfort zone -- your amygdalae are at risk of being triggered. Sometimes when you just think about stepping outside your comfort zone, your amygdalae can get triggered.

The trick is to gradually "outwit" your amygdalae. You can do things just outside your comfort zone. Or you can just visualize them. You can gradually desensitize your amygdalae. Over time you can step further and further outside your original comfort zone.

If you've been having difficulties with procrastination or giving up easily, then there may be a breakthrough available to you when you apply SSPP. (However, if you're a victim of a deep-seated self-sabotage program, you may have to handle that first -- see Make-or-Break Issue.)

You may want to come up with a sequence of steps to take so each step will make the next step easier. Realize that you can start with very small steps. At some point you could start gradually increasing the size of your steps. From small acorns, giant oaks can grow!

If your main interest is to make more money (particularly online), then you've come to the right place. Many people fail because they try to run before they learn to walk... or they fail because they try to walk before they learn to crawl. For anyone who's been trying to make money online without success, it may be more likely to start working when you start with small steps.

You could also apply SSPP to your personal growth and development. Every day you could think of something to do to improve your competence in some area of your life. A good place to start may be with "Replace "I Can't..." with "I Won't..." (to be added soon). (Be sure to start with steps that are small enough to be easily completed.)


Maximize Your Time Usage!

...I am about to illuminate something you really, really need to think about. Listen: In only 365 days from today, one more year will have passed into history. No matter who you are, 365 days is all you are going to get in the next year. By the way, that comes out to 8,760 hours... or 525,600 minutes... or... 31,536,000 seconds.

Now, let's say you are rich as hell and you are willing to pay dearly to have more time in the coming year than other people. Let's say you want just 10 extra minutes and you are willing to pay one million dollars for each of those 10 minutes.

You can't buy them. They're not for sale.

You couldn't even buy one extra second... for 100 billion dollars. Time is not for sale. Not at any price. During the next year, nobody is going to have more time than you and nobody (except those who go to "Check-out City") is going to have less.

So what? Well, here is the "so what" of it: The difference from where you are right now, today... and where... you will be 1-year from today, depends on one thing and one thing only. It depends on...

What You Do With Those 8,760 Hours You've Got To Work With In The Next Year

What you think about isn't going to produce any change whatsoever. What you plan isn't going to create any change either. How you feel isn't going to make a difference. What you read; what you learn; what you study; what you discover... none of these things... none whatsoever... is going to make a scintilla of difference about where you are 1-year from today. Get this straight in your head: The only thing (except for pure happenstance) that is going to make any difference at all in your life... is...

What You Do!

[Frederick Mann: What you DO is primary. How you FEEL has a major impact on what you do and how well you do it (-- "Raise Your Mood Level" will be added soon). An important principle is to perform actions that produce LEVERAGE. You can do what makes you more EFFECTIVE and EFFICIENT. What you do today can enable you to produce increasingly more in your future. What you READ, STUDY, LEARN, and DISCOVER can raise the quality of what you "Do!" in your future. What you THINK and PLAN can also improve what you "Do!".]

So, what are you going to do with those 8,760 hours you've got to work with in the coming year? Actually, what you are going to do with a lot of those hours is outside your control. For example: You've almost got to spend approximately 2,920 of those hours sleeping. True, you could sleep less... but... that will almost certainly be counter-productive. The most recent research indicates the vast majority of Americans need MORE than eight hours of sleep per day... and yet... most of us get less.

Which, of course, makes us a nation of people who are sleep deprived... and... sleep deprived people suffer from fuzzy thinking, make bad decisions, and are more at risk for all types of health problems.

Whatever you do, don't try to become more productive by getting less sleep. That tactic will backfire on you...

...After deducting the time we need to spend sleeping, we're down to 5,840 hours to work with in the coming year. Let's say you are neither rich, retired nor retarded. That means you've got to spend a significant amount of time earning enough fungolas to support yourself and your family. To do this, let's say you work the proverbial 40 hours per week. Also, you've got to get ready for work, get to work and get home from work. Some of you have a long commute, some are lucky enough to work at home... but... I'm going to decide arbitrarily, we need to add an average of 10 hours per week to get ready, and get to and from work. Let's give you a two week yearly vacation... which means... you are going to use up 2,500 of your hours (50 hours per week times 50 weeks per year) on work-related activities.

We are now down to 3,340 hours we've got left in the coming year.

Ah, but we ain't at the end of our deductions yet. No Sir. But rather than belabor the obvious, let's make one sizable deduction for what I will designate as "Absolute Necessities of Life." This might include playing with your kids, giving time and support to your spouse and friends, brushing your teeth, shopping for groceries, getting your car repaired, shaving, taking some "down time" to let yourself recharge and so on. The time necessary to take care of the "Absolute Necessities of Life" will, of course, vary from individual to individual... but... I can't even imagine this taking anyone (who actually has a life) less than 3 to 4 hours per day so... this means... we're going to have to whack off at least another 2,000 hours from the stash of time we're allotted for the coming year.

I'm going to stop with these deductions. You've got the idea by now, don't you Boopsie?

Let us inch a bit closer to the truth: You really do not have 8,760 hours to decide what to do with in the coming year. In truth, with so many of your hours already "spoken for," you probably don't even have 1,000 "discretionary" hours to decide what to do with in the next year. That gives you something like 2 hours and 42 minutes per day with which you have to work to change your life for the better.

And, I feel certain, most of you have lives so jam-packed that... the truth is... you only have a fraction of even that small amount of "discretionary" time each day. And, I bet whatever amount of discretionary time you do have, I bet you use almost none of it to seriously advance the quality of your life. And, if you care... if you truly care... about elevating your status and achieving your goals...

This Has GotTo Stop!

You simply must use your discretionary time intelligently... or else... you don't have a rat's ass of a chance of getting anywhere that's worth being.

So, what do you do first? I'm gonna tell you but, before I do, I want to make an important observation: Many people hate it when I write newsletters like this. These readers don't want to get the fundamentals right... no... they want to skip right to the "details." But your life is already filled with details... none of which... are doing doodley squat to enhance your life. You cannot intelligently decide which details you should really attend to... unless... you are clear and accurate about what your guiding fundamentals must be.

Here's something else: Success is not complicated. It is simple. The real answers are... so simple... they are downright corny. But simple does not mean easy. Running the Boston Marathon is very simple. All you have to do is keep putting one foot in front of the other for 26+ miles.

Simple as pie. Hard as hell.

I want you to be one of the "Masters of the Millennium." I want you to achieve more in the year 2,000 than you have achieved in all the previous years of your life. That means you've got a lot of details to attend to in the year 2,000... plus... you've got to attend to the right details. I've got less than two months to help you get this in laser-sharp focus. Let's see if I can get a commitment from you. Just for approximately the next 30 days. Just from the time you read this letter and the time you read next month's. This commitment will cost you maybe $20.00 or $30.00 and will take less than five minutes of your time for each of the next 30-days.

Here's all I'm going to ask you to do: Go to a local drug store, a Radio Shack or wherever and get yourself an el cheapo, microcassette tape recorder and 30 of those little bitty microcassettes.

Keep your el cheapo recorder with you all the time and use one microcassette each day to keep a "time diary." Use it approximately once every hour of your waking hours. Your audio entries should only take seconds. They should be something like this:

"2:15 to 3:10:" Had cavity filled by Doc Megapain.
"3:10 to 3:40:" Drove back to office.
"3:40 to 5:30:" Returned phone calls at work from customers with routine questions."
Etc., etc., etc.

That's all I want you to do. I know, I know. You're way ahead of me. You already know what this is all about. You already know the basics of my evil scheme to change your life for the better.

Bullsh...

You don't have a clue. Please just trust me on this. All you've got to lose is $20 or $30 and a couple orthree hours out of one lousy month.

All you've got to gain is everything you've ever lusted for.

Look, stop thinking you're so damn sophisticated. So damn smart. So far above doing a simple exercise like this. Let me tell you something...

The most noteworthy statistic below is that by sending 2,106 "intersted visitors" to a certain program's website it was possible for me (Frederick Mann) to earn $107,500. ("interested visitors" refer to people who entered their names and email addresses at the website.)

The statistics reflect my track record with a certain one-up program from 25th January, 2006 (the day I joined) to 18th August, 2006. My first sale (after the qualifying sale that was passed up to my sponsor) occurred on 14th February, 2006. This case study ends with my sale on 18th August, 2006. (Unfortunately, the program was shut down by government agents soon after this.)

The program utilized professional sales people called "Team Leaders." Interested Visitors could complete an online form to request callbacks from Team Leaders. On average, for every callback requested, I earned $488.63!

Apart from earning over $100,000, the most important statistic is "Earnings per "Interested Visitor": $51.04." I estimate that the total number of visitors sent to my program website during the case study was about 15,000. About one in seven visitors were interested enough to provide their email addresses. This means that I earned about $7.16 per visitor on average.

Quality of visitors is very important. Most of the visitors came from my own lists I've been building since 1997. It's very important to understand the difference between promoting to "MLMers with some experience and online moneymakers" on the one hand, and "opportunity seekers" on the other hand. Generally, promoting to "opportunity seekers" yields poor results.

The lowest-quality visitors are probably "guaranteed visitors." The ones I've tested have all yielded zero results. There are dishonest and fraudulent ways for companies to send "pretend visitors" to a website -- with your website stats showing the visitors -- but with no visitors having actually seen your website! So, if you purchase "guaranteed visitors" sent to any of your websites, the chances are high that you'll get zero results!

The next lowest-quality visitors are probably leads provided by lead companies. Generally, it's a waste of time and money to promote to such leads.

Good-quality leads are people on your own lists you've communicated with repeatedly -- even if it's just in the form of promotional emails. I started building my own lists in 1997 by promoting to discussion boards -- see "Great Marketing Training Program" for details and training on how to do this. Many discussion boards are frequented by people who've been trying to make money online for some time, and who have spent money on money-promising programs. Most of them have not earned any significant money. If you respond to their questions and you have something really good to offer, you can get them to join your lists. In general, my own list-building methods bring me good-quality leads.

Best-quality leads are people who have purchased from you and/or who have participated with you in one or more moneymaking programs and earned at least some money.

It's important to note that my own promotion of the above one-up program was mostly to good-quality and best-quality leads. Had I promoted to lower-quality leads, my results would not have been as good.

It's also important to note that this case study represents a "statistically significant sample." Once you've established such statistics, you get a "read" on what you need to do to earn money with a particular program, and how profitable your marketing actions are likely to be. You also get a "read" on what it might be worth paying per visitor generated, if you decide to use paid advertising.

From a business perspective, the statistics open the door to testing various forms of marketing. If you can find a way of spending $1-$2 per good-quality visitor to a particular website (earning you $7 each on average), then you can "roll out" what's profitable and earn virtually unlimited amounts!
